What Do Wannabe Bodybuilders And Entrepreneurs Have In Common?
Since getting back into the habit of visiting the gym last year I’ve also started reading some of the more popular forums related to weight training, most of which are aimed at bodybuilders (sadly weightlifting, powerlifting and strongman seem to be far too niche to survive on their own).Whilst bodybuilding isn’t my thing, I did spend some time reading the bodybuilding forums. In particular the nutrition and weight loss sections of the forums, as one thing bodybuilders are generally good at is stripping off body fat – which I needed to do.
There’s three things that quickly leap out you when you start reading these forums:
- an obsession with finding the exact optimum routine, arguing over the precise number sets, reps, exercise selection and number of training days per week;
- an obsession with finding the exact optimum diet, arguing intently over the number of grams of protein, carbohydrates, fat, creatine or mix of whey versus other protein sources;
- looking for a short cut to achieving the body they want.
The first two issues are the reason that most would be bodybuilders fail to make any significant progress and start doing the third. Sadly many would be entrepreneurs make very similar mistakes and have:
- an obsession with finding the perfect/best/right business idea;
- an obsession with finding the right/best/perfect way to start a business;
- a tendency to start looking for a short cut…
The reality is that progress in bodybuilding comes from two things:
- hard work in the gym, turning up for every session and making progress, no matter how small every session – the precise routing is rarely important;
- eating a good healthy diet that includes enough protein and enough calories.
Likewise starting a successful business depends upon:
- working hard to execute a reasonable business idea well;
- working hard to overcome problems and learning to accept mistakes, fix them and get on with the job.
In short, whether you’re a bodybuilder or an entrepreneur, success comes through hard work and dedication.
Ah but what about those shortcuts? Well contrary to popular opinion there aren’t any. For the bodybuilder, sure anabolic steroids work, but you still need to do the hard work in the gym and eat right (watch the excellent documentary Bigger, Stronger, Faster if you want to learn more). As for the entrepreneur, sorry but get rich quick schemes, just don’t work.
In short, forget short cuts. Just get working hard!
